I now believe that perseverance is a much deeper concept than I had previously thought. I also realized that it related very closely to the term "persistence". Persistence is the firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. This can be interpreted very easily as a definition for perseverance too. This shows that the two terms terms are in very close relation. I also found that perseverance enables an individual to endeavour in spite of adversity, or obstacles. It prevents a person from surrendering while striving to achieve goals. This can be related to Chris Gardner, from "The Pursuit of Happyness", and his life story. His wife left him with his son, and eventually they became homeless. Chris tried to pursue a stock broker job at a prestigious firm, with many other applicants. He never gave up and with almost no money and no home, he got the job. Persistence prevented Chris from surrendering while striving to reach his goal. Problems will arise but it is facing the challenges with a positive attitude that allows an individual to continue reaching their dreams and desires. With perseverance, all is achievable.
A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend. ~Author Unknown
Conclusion
I have met my claim that I introduced in my flash fiction piece. That was that obstacles can come across your path, and your future might look bleak, you just have to overcome those obstacles and not be afraid to pick yourself back up and persevere through. Kevin Williams was a prime example of perseverance in my flash fiction, and he overcame huge obstacles to reach his goal of going to the NFL. Without perseverance in the world, society would almost cease to exist. Almost everyone in the world has had to persevere at some point in their life, and many of the things we have in the world today would be nothing without it. For example, we would not have the world of sports as athletes have to persevere a great deal to make it to the pros. A modern-day example of this would be Michael Oher from "The Blind Side". He didn't know where his family was and didn't have a home, although he had some incredible athletic gifts. He pushed himself with the help of his new foster family, and made it to the NFL. Another example would be many of the medicine and scientific discoveries we have today. Without perseverance in the world, scientists would just give up on finding cures to diseases when faced with a challenging task. This could eventually lead to a drastic drop in population around the world. Cancer would never find a cure without scientists persevering everyday, with many obstacles that come across their paths. Thus, perseverance is the foundation of our world and without it society would almost cease to exist.
